Area 54 will play host on Saturday to a unique all-Fredonia show featuring a trio of bands on a genre-mashing bill.
Hitting the stage will be New Venice (alt-metal), Ordinary Feeling (shoegaze and formerly known until just recently as Bone Machine), and Face First (Fredonia hardcore). Doors open at 7 p.m. and music starts at 8.
1120 Press caught up with a few of the musicians who’ll be playing Saturday for a quick conversation in advance of the show. We thank them for their time.
1120 PRESS: An all-Fredonia bill in Buffalo is a bit different, and the mixed-genre aspect adds to the intrigue. Shows at Area 54/Amy’s Place over the last several months have been thriving. How’s everyone feeling about this show as it draws near?
LOGAN (New Venice): I’m really excited! It’s been two years since I’ve played Area 54 and it’s really cool to have an all-Fredonia bill on a Buffalo stage! I just hope this cold clears up beforehand, lol.
IAN (New Venice): I’m really psyched! It’s a new venue for me and being able to do it with Ordinary Feeling (Bone Machine) and Face First, two bands I really love, makes it even better.
CODY (New Venice): We’re all super excited. Like Logan mentioned, a couple of us have performed at Amy’s Place before a couple years back with a different band so it’ll be really cool to be back there and see how it’s changed.
1120: How did the idea for an all-Fredonia show at Amy’s come about?
CODY: To be honest, it was kind of a freak accident. When we booked the show, we had to make our own bill. We had a list of bands we wanted to ask and the Face First and Ordinary Feeling (Bone Machine) guys were the first ones to get back to us. Once we realized it was all Fredonia bands, we decided to attach that as a sort-of theme because we thought it was neat.
IAN: Yeah, there was no master plan for a ‘Fredonia Take Over.’ It was just a nice coincidence that we’ve leaned into.
1120: Buffalo’s music scene wouldn’t be what it is without the talent from Fredonia. So many Buffalo bands and artists have their roots there. How do bands/musicians in Fredonia view the Buffalo scene?
LOGAN: Fredonia looks up to the Buffalo scene! We see Buffalo as such a vibrant and energized scene that most Fredonia bands make it a goal to gig there regularly. The bands and venues and its people are stellar and so supportive of each other.
CODY: It’s awesome to hear that the Buffalo scene values Fredonia’s as much as it does. There’s definitely a lot of reverence for the Buffalo music scene from the bands around here. I feel like it’s maybe viewed as a bit of a next step when a Fredonia band makes it out to Buffalo. That’s how I always felt anyway.
IAN: I’ve always viewed the Buffalo scene with a lot of admiration, and like Cody and Logan said, it’s really cool that you guys value us the same way. It’s a bit of a testing ground in the sense that if we can get people to like us in Buffalo, we must be doing something right.
GRADY (Ordinary Feeling/Bone Machine): Buffalo feels more like an extension of the Fredonia scene. There’s a lot of great opportunities for bands to play in both places.
1120: Thanks so much for speaking with us. Before we go, what should people who turn out to the show expect Saturday?
GRADY: You’ll hear a pretty big range of music on this gig. Each band plays in a different style.
CODY: I like to think of the lineup for Saturday’s show as sort of a nice sample of what
Fredonia’s music scene has to offer. The bands we’re working with are all super cool and hopefully it’ll inspire more people to take a look at all the other incredible creative projects coming out of Fredonia.
IAN: If you make it out to the show, you’ll be in for a fantastic night. Ordinary Feeling (Bone Machine) and Face First are excellent bands. And like Cody said, it’s a really good sampling of what’s going on in Fredonia. It’s one of the most diverse scenes around and this show will hopefully be something that inspires people to check out more of it.
