(EDITOR’S NOTE — We’ve said it before and we meant it: Bran Schlia is an absolute Renaissance man. He’s a musician, filmmaker, producer, music educator and founder of Steak and Cake Records. And today, Bran has dropped a very cool live album of recordings from shows held in the basement of his home from past years. But, that’s not all. After a long hiatus initially prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Bran has decided the show must go on. With his permission, we’re re-running the message sent today from the Steak and Cake Records Bandcamp page. Check it out, hit the link below and buy the new LP, and go to shows!)
“I bought my house because I wanted to run a basement show space. That was a big part of the scene in 2015 and that’s what we did, for years! We called the place Curlys.
“All the way up to 2020, right up to the start of the pandemic, we had about 2-3 shows a month, usually 3 locals and one touring band. Every single one of those shows was recorded by an sm57 embedded in the ceiling joist.
“Today I’m really happy to share a remastered collection of the absolute most ripping tracks to happen on that stage during those 5 years. Looking over the names on this track list is like reading a history book on Buffalo music in the post 2010’s. Titans of the scene have come and gone and started again. But the best part is listening to the crowd reacting. It was always about the artist at Curlys and the bands often reached another level because of that.
“So please, join us for the grand reopening on Saturday February 21st 7pm $10.”
